Up against a torrent of televised impeachment-related announcements, hearings and press conferences, many daytime shows got socked with heavy preemptions and struggled against the atypically strong competition in the session ending September 29.
For example even such heavy hitters as syndication’s highest rated show of the week Judge Judy – which has been the top show in first-run for the past 10 seasons – (6.0 live plus same day national Nielsen, down 8% from the week before) and second biggest courtroom strip Hot Bench (1.8, down 14%) were not immune.
Among the freshman talkers The Kelly Clarkson Show (1.2, down 14%) was widely preempted but remained the No. 1 new show overall in syndication.
Tamron Hall (0.9, steady) stood fast despite multiple breaking news preemptions and tripled the rating of rookie talk rival Mel Robbins (0.3, down 25%).
In courtroom newcomer action Jerry Springer’s Judge Jerry (1.0, steady) out-rated the other two frosh court shows combined: Personal Injury Court (0.5, up 25%) and Protection Court (0.3, unchanged).
Elsewhere the new entries on the game show playing field in their second week, 25 Words or Less (0.8, unchanged) and America Says (0.6, up 20%), were not far apart.
Meanwhile, some established shows held their ground. Dr Phil (2.3, steady) led the talkers for the 160th straight week.
Live with Kelly and Ryan (2.0, steady) was the No. 2 talk show for the 31st consecutive week, widening its lead over Ellen DeGeneres (1.7, down 6%).
In access most entertainment magazines were at their best, going all out covering the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards on September 23.
Entertainment Tonight (2.8 individual day rating on September 23, up 7% from the previous session) led the group but was not the only show seeing rising ratings with its next day reporting on television’s annual gala. Access Hollywood (1.5, up 7%) and Extra (1.0, up 11%) saw solid increases on the Monday after the kudocast. Daily Mail TV (0.8, steady) also did well, finishing first or second in its time slot in a number of closely-watched metered markets.
