2022 was a transformative year in local media and our team rose to the challenge by offering strategies on recruiting and retaining top talent, advising local news organizations to change up their weathercasts, making recommendations on how broadcasters can strengthen their YouTube presence, and conducting a study on improving trust in local journalism with the RTDNA. Here are our most popular posts of the year in local media.
At the top of the list this year: a post from Triston Sanders on a hot topic: recruitment and retention in local news. Triston shares her advice for four strategies to tackle the challenge of recruiting and retaining top talent.
Pat Maday wrote an urgent plea: local TV news must change its daily weathercast, following new research conducted exclusively for the 2022 Magid Weather Institute™ that showed for the first time ever, a source other than a local weathercast is used as frequently for weather information.
VIDEO: Bill Hague explored the topic of improving trust in local journalism with two members of the RTDNA board of directors: Ellen Crooke, Senior Vice President of News at TEGNA, and Sean McLaughlin, Vice President of News at E.W. Scripps Company. This conversation followed the groundbreaking research project the RTDNA conducted with Magid on trust in local news sources this year.
In January, we announced the hiring of Desirée Colomina as Senior Consultant, Local Media. Colomina, an award-winning journalist and executive producer, brings expertise in broadcast media, journalism, and Spanish-language television to her role.

Results of the study Magid conducted with RTDNA were released in an exclusive first look at RTDNA22 in Indianapolis, detailing how local journalists can rebuild and regain trusts with consumers.
As some traditional local news providers struggle to adapt an “authentically local” framework for their coverage, Bill Hague examined how nonprofit news organizations are breaking the news model and testing out innovative ways of producing and distributing local news.

One platform that is standing out as vitally important for broadcasters to breakthrough on: YouTube. Jaime Spencer and Katie Larson discussed why YouTube is critical to grow awareness and audience, and how broadcasters can strengthen their presence on this highly influential platform.
In May, we announced that Cesar Aldama joined the Magid team as Senior Consultant, Local Media. Aldama, an Edward R. Murrow and Emmy-award winning journalist, brings more than two decades of multi-platform experience to his role.
