NEW YORK, June 13, 2017 – Magid, a research based consultancy, today announced that Mike Vorhaus, President of Magid Advisors, will serve as a keynote speaker for the research track at VidCon in Anaheim, from June 21-24, 2017.
Created in 2010, VidCon is the largest conference of its kind, gathering online video viewers, creators and industry representatives to discuss all things related to online video.
The keynote, “The Annual State of Digital Video”, will detail the latest research on online video from Magid along with a pinpoint analysis of emerging trends. The presentation will take place June 22nd at the Anaheim Convention Center.
According to Magid, 46% of US consumers aged 5-64 stream content daily, a 14% increase from 2014. This is in addition to their daily usage of traditional TV, which is at about five hours per day.
Among audiences aged 18-34, laptops and smartphones are the primary medium for streaming, with 33% using a laptop/PC and 19% using a smartphone to consume content. Only 23% of this group picks television as their go-to device for streaming content.
During his keynote, Vorhaus will also present recent data on the livecasting phenomenon that has gained in popularity across the globe.
Livecasting is currently a $5 billion industry in China, and is experiencing a surge in popularity in the United States due to the growth of esports and user-generated content on Facebook and YouTube. 48% of U.S. consumers aged 5-64 watch livestream video at least once a week while 23% consume it at least once a day.
Consumers find livecasting appealing as it is a way to watch breaking news (24%), view videos by friends or family (23%), or watch how-to videos (21%).
Facebook and YouTube are currently the go-to livecasting platforms, at 45% and 44% respectively. However, Instagram (28%), Twitter (19%) and Snapchat (17%) have seen growth among a younger, more personality-driven audience.
