“Live” and “Tamron” advance against hurricanes Laura & Marco

Review based on a national syndicated rating report for the week ending August 30, 2020.

Very few daytime shows were able to improve in the session ending August 30. Sporadic local market preemptions occurred throughout the week for news coverage of hurricanes Laura and Marco in the Gulf Coast, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and four days of the 2020 Republican National Convention.

For example only two of the top ten talk shows were able to break into the plus column: Live with Kelly and Ryan (three week high 1.6 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 7% from the week before) and hot rookie Tamron Hall (0.7, up 17%), which has been snapped up for year two.

The season’s top chat show in the household ratings, Dr. Phil (1.9, steady), took the weekly talk crown for the ninth time in the past 10 frames.

Coming in third, behind runaway leaders “Phil” and “Live” was Maury (1.0, unchanged), which fell 17% from last year at this time. Ellen DeGeneres (0.9, unchanged) dropped 36% year to year and remained at its all-time low for a third straight week.

The highest rated strip by far in daytime was supreme court show Judge Judy (5.5, steady), which has been first-run syndication’s overall household ratings leader for the past 11 years.
