The syndicated entertainment magazines successfully parlayed some of the excitement leading up to the 76th Golden Globe Awards into strong ratings for the session ending January 6.
The group’s biggest percentage winners in the opening week of 2019 were magazine leader Entertainment Tonight (2.8 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 22% from the week before), Access (1.2, up 20%), Extra (1.0, up 11%), which also grew 25% in the key W25-54 demo and Daily Mail TV (0.9, up 13%), which ratcheted up 33% in the coveted demo.
Sophomore Page Six TV registered monster gains in most of the largest markets, including week to week surges of 60% in New York, 25% in Philadelphia and 50% in Dallas.
In daytime Dr. Phil (2.3, steady), which was completely in reruns, and Live with Kelly and Ryan (2.3, steady) tied for first place in talk.
Other chat shows in the top eight included Ellen DeGeneres (2.1, up 17%), Maury (1.4, unchanged), Steve Wilkos (1.2, up 9%), repeat episodes of Steve Harvey’s Steve (1.1, down 8%),Wendy Williams (1.1, unchanged) and Rachael Ray (1.1, unchanged).
Further back was week one of a two-week tryout for talk show hopeful Breakthrough with Dr. Steve Perry (0.4/1 weighted metered market average, down 50% from its year-ago time periods).
In other precincts true crime leader Dateline (1.2, steady) shot up 20% among W25-54.
The No. 1 program overall was Judge Judy (6.5, up 8%) even though it aired reruns on all five days. This marked the 23rd week in a row that “Judy” was syndication’s highest-rated show.
