Entertainment magazines are the rating stars in post Thanksgiving session

Review based on a national syndicated rating report for the week ending December 6, 2020.

The big four entertainment magazines all uncorked double digit rating increases in a generally powerful post-holiday session ending December 6.

Entertainment Tonight (2.4 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 14% from the week before) set the pace for the group. Access Hollywood (1.1, up 10%) matched its season high. TMZ (0.8, up 14%) and Extra (0.7, up 17%) both joined the party, with “Extra” surging 33% in the key W25-54 demo and tying its season high despite a ton of preemptions, including not being able to air its primary run four times in the top three markets.

Live with Kelly and Ryan (2.0, up 5%) finished first in talk for the ninth time in the past 13 weeks. Dr. Phil (1.9, up 6%) was a strong second.

Ellen DeGeneres (1.2, down 8%) held on for third, but lost ground in the second week of its annual “12 Days of Giveways” and declined 43% from the same week last year.

On December 10 host DeGeneres disclosed that she had tested positive for the coronavirus and that her show would halt production until after the new year.

Among the week’s ratings winners, sophomore stars Kelly Clarkson (1.0, up 11%) and Tamron Hall (0.8, up 14%) were sharply higher even though both shows had to overcome massive preemptions.  Among W25-54, “Clarkson” climbed 25% and “Hall” surged 33%.

Judge Judy (5.8, down 3%) was syndication’s No. 1 show overall for the 12th time in the past 16 weeks.
