Chico’s the latest clothier to sell on Amazon

Chico’s clothes and accessories will be available on Amazon in mid-May, the company announced Monday.

Chico’s FAS, whose other brands include White House Black Market and Soma, says items will be eligible for free shipping and free returns through Amazon’s Prime membership program, Retail Dive reports. If all goes well, Chico’s may go on to sell items from White House Black Market and Soma brands on Amazon, per PYMNTS.

Amazon has been looking to lure established clothing brands to its site, which could propel the e-commerce giant to become the No. 1 apparel retailer in the U.S. this year, CNBC reports. Amazon already is working with Nike, Calvin Klein and Carter’s.

Chico’s customer base could benefit Amazon, which is less successful among Baby Boomer shoppers than other generations, Matt Sargent, senior vice president of retail at consulting firm Magid, told Retail Dive.

Less than a third — 31 percent — of Baby Boomers are Amazon Prime members, compared with 54 percent of Millennials and 41 percent of Gen Xers, according to Magid’s research.

Chico’s operates 1,460 stores in the U.S. and Canada and in its fourth quarter, comparable sales dropped 5.2 percent from the prior year, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Chico’s said it doesn’t expect sales through Amazon to be material to 2018 results. The company generated $2.28 billion of sales in its last fiscal year, per WSJ.
