Magazines Make Monster Moves with Oscar Coverage

Review based on a national syndicated rating report for the week ending April 3, 2022.

Following the slap heard around the world at the 94th Academy Awards, the major magazines clocked double digit improvement with their next-day coverage in the session ending April 3.

Inside Edition (2.4 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 20% from the week before) and Entertainment Tonight (8-week high 2.3, up 28%) were the biggest winners. ET was the No. 1 magazine overall for its Oscar recap reporting, skyrocketing 56% to a category best single-day 2.8 for its coverage on March 28.

Also getting big Nielsen marks were red carpet favorites Extra (season high 0.7, up 17%), which swelled 33% for its next day Oscar coverage and Access Hollywood, which shot up 13% on the 28th.

In daytime syndication, Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.8, up 13%) went right through the roof with a 31% increase to a single-day 2.1 for its annual “After Oscars Show” and led the talkers for the fourth week in a row.

Dr. Phil (1.7, up 13%) was a close second, followed by Kelly Clarkson (0.9, up 13%).

Compared to last year at this time “Live” was up 13%, “Phil” improved 6% while “Clarkson” increased 13%. Top shelf talker Ellen DeGeneres, in its 19th and final season, also grew 13% year to year to a 0.9 despite being partially preempted by breaking news in numerous markets.

Access game shows were led by Jeopardy (5.6, up 10%) for the first time in three weeks. Family Feud (5.3, up 2%) was next in line.

Among courtroom proceedings the Nielsen verdict went to Judge Judy (4.8, up 7%), which also decreed a 4% gain over the same week last year. Hot Bench (1.5, up 7%) was the clear number two in the category, while People’s Court (0.8, up 14%) held on for third.
