“Live” Thrives in Christmas Week

Review based on a national syndicated rating report for the week ending December 25, 2022.

Live with Kelly and Ryan (new season high 1.8 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 6% from the week before) was very merry in the otherwise sluggish holiday session ending December 25, 2022.

In leading the talk shows for the 31st week in a row, Live leapt to its best ratings of the year and opened up its largest lead over its closest competitor since the week of December 21, 2020.

Most of the other top strips lost ground due to preemptions for football games, hearings on the January 6th Capitol riot, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech to Congress and a daytime press conference with President Joe Biden.

Dr. Phil (1.3, down 13%) took second place, followed by Kelly Clarkson (1.0, steady and up 11% from last year), Drew Barrymore (0.8, down 11%, but up 60% from last year) and Rachael Ray (0.7, down 13%), which was tied by Tamron Hall (0.7, steady and up 17% from last year).

The talk show rookie race remained tight with leaders Jennifer Hudson (0.6) and Sherri (0.6) exactly even. Both top rated newcomers had their regular titles sidelined during the World Cup, so the Christmas frame was their first week back.

Game show star freshman Pictionary (new season high 0.6, up 20%) had its highest rated week yet.

Gainers among the major magazines included Entertainment Tonight (2.2, steady) which was up 22% from last year and Extra (0.6, steady) which rose 50% among W25-54.
