“Barrymore” Boffo Amid Biden Buzz

Review based on a national syndicated rating report for the week ending December 18, 2022.

Apparently propelled by an avalanche of advance publicity for its major interview with President Joe Biden — his first since the midterm elections — The Drew Barrymore Show (new series high 0.9 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 29% from the week before and up 80% from last year at this time) surged to the highest ratings in the program’s three-year history in the session ending December 18.

The session was actually one week prior to Barrymore’s big sit-down with both POTUS and FLOTUS. The Presidential interview was not telecast until December 19. It was rebroadcast December 26.

Besides Drew Barrymore, which averaged more than 1.3-million viewers each day, several other shows were stellar despite having to compete against (or being preempted by) Fox’s coverage of the World Cup semifinals on December 13th and 14th.

At the top of the talkers for a 30th week in a row was Live with Kelly and Ryan (new season high 1.7, up 6% in households and up 17% among W25-54 to a 0.7 demo rating).

Not far behind was Dr. Phil (new season high 1.5, up 15% in households and up 25% to a 0.5 in the demo).

Also scoring double digit increases were: Kelly Clarkson (1.0, up 11%), which matched its best rating of the season, and Rachael Ray (season high 0.8, up 14%).

Court shows getting favorable verdicts from Nielsen were legal leaders Judge Judy (4.3, up 8%) and Hot Bench (1.2, up 9%).

Pictionary (0.5, up 25%) was the strong performer of the freshman class.
