A San Francisco startup named Skillz hopes to literally cash in on real-money mobile games.

Skillz lets mobile app developers add cash prizes of $1 to $20 in games like "Strike: Real Money Bowling" and "Mini Golf 3D Putt Putt."

So far, Skillz-powered games have attracted about 1.5 million players. While that's a relatively small number, a unit of the research firm Frank N. Magid Associates projected that this emerging genre of mobile games with cash rewards has the potential to generate more than $9 billion in revenue in the U.S. by 2017.
